ViBe Matrix

The ViBe (Visual Behaviour) Matrix is a validated tool which can be used to document atypical visual behaviours in children who are unable to access traditional visual testing.

It may be used to support the diagnosis of cerebral visual impairment (CVI) , to establish the presence of a verifiable visual dysfunction.

The heterogenous group of children which present on their diagnostic journey to CVI will necessitate a flexible approach, and not all children will be able to demonstrate a visual behaviour to match each of the three columns (see it, find it, use it).

Research is underway to establish the role of ViBe Matrix in documenting progress or to demonstrate the impact of a intervention.

The ViBe Matrix presupposes that a child’s vision typically develops in a stepwise fashion, starting with limited awareness, progressing through a phase of increasing visual attention, to better visual interest and ability to detect and locate objects, to visual cognition, understanding, memory and perception.

The eye health professional or teacher can use their own style and techniques of visual assessment to demonstrate the presence of absence of a visual behaviour, or indeed notice the variability of visual behaviours in different environments.
